Apiro Tourism

This Baroque abbey is dedicated the patron saint of the city, Urban, and was built in 1632 by Giangiacomo Baldini. The interior forms a Latin cross with three naves and octagonal dome. This abbey preserves a 17th century altar piece depicting the Coronation of the Virgin and Pope Saint Urban I by Angelo Scoccianti (son of Andrea).

The external square-shaped structure, built from irregular stones, is completed by a semicircular apse on which the altar stands. The altar is lit by All the outer structure, built from irregular stones team, is complemented by a square-shaped semi-circular apse on which stands the altar, lit by a narrow lancet window.

This small monastic church, built before the 14th century, was once a parish named in the honour of St. Stephen and known as “Santo Stefano di Buraco” or “di Montalvello”.

This is one of the oldest churches in the province of Macerata. It is nestled on a panoramic hill located South of the town (513 masl). Its structure combines the church and the sacristy and it is built from square-shaped stones.

This church grew up in the homonymous hamlet, few kms far from Apiro. While staying here, Saint Francis of Assisi made several miracles.

This is definitely the oldest church in Apiro, since it was built before the 12th century.
In this building two styles overlap: the original medieval style and the baroque interior (early 18th century).

This collegiate church dates back before the year one thousand but was consecrated in 1086 and then rebuilt in the 13th century. It began its decline in the early 15th century.

This is a medieval church whose archivolt preserves a Gothic inscription dating from 1256. Historians agree that the date written should be the year the portal, not the entire church building which is probably older, was built.

Its first records date back to 1033 but the alley behind this church, called “alley of catacombs” is perhaps referring to an older structure.

This convent once housed a school of embroidery. Currently only a few nuns live there. They follow the Rule of Saint Francis.

This huge square-shaped town hall was built in 1246 and has undergone many renovations. The council chamber houses a work by Allegretto Nuzi, depicting the Virgin with Child and Saints (1366).

Once, this gate was known as Porta Musone. Currently it is the main gate to the town of Apiro.

This church was built in the late 14th century and grew up around a fresco called “Figura” attributed to Ottaviano Nelli from Gubbio (1375-1444). This church and the hospice called Ospedale dei Pellegrini (later Monte Frumentario) were once a single unit.

These walls have two main building phases, which have been dated to the Middle Ages and the first half the 15th century (commissioned by Francesco Sforza). Around the walls were prepared fourteen irregular polygonal towers, currently there are still five, four of which are privately owned.

The church was built in 1546. Afterwards the Convento dei P.P. Cappuccini (Capuchin monastery) was outbuilding. Inside a courtyard paved with bricks encloses the cloister and the well.
